Nouveau Standard is a design and publishing studio founded in 2024 by Simon Brandeau and Jonathan Fleurance. Extending their architectural practice through Atelier Standard, based in Nantes, the duo develops a distinctive universe dedicated to collectible furniture and objects.
Through its collections, Nouveau Standard explores the intimate relationship we maintain with objects and the memories they carry. Drawing inspiration from the history of fashion, design, and the decorative arts, the studio revisits forms, uses, and details inherited from different eras.
« We are inspired by iconic pieces of furniture and everyday objects that are sometimes considered outdated, yet have deeply shaped our collective imagination. With Nouveau Standard, we seek to transform this heritage into contemporary, enduring, and distinctive pieces, » explains Simon Brandeau.
Each collection begins with an act of remembrance. The challenge lies in finding a balance between the defining characteristics of a period—its forms, materials, and cultural references—and their reinterpretation through a contemporary lens. The studio’s creations exist between familiarity and surprise, evoking memories without ever slipping into mere nostalgia.
This approach is expressed through a careful exploration of materials and their combinations. Metal, textile, glass, and wood come together in pieces developed in close collaboration with artisans and manufacturers. Nouveau Standard advocates a design practice rooted in craftsmanship, valuing time, quality of execution, and production on a human scale.
Whether through architecture, furniture, or objects, all of the studio’s projects contribute to the development of a singular design language: one in which memory becomes a material for creation. A distinctive aesthetic that is both rigorous and sensitive, structured yet delicate, and deeply personal.
